Apocalypse in Mariupol

APOCALYPSE IN MARIUPOL

VALERY MELNIKOV

I first went to the Donbass eight years ago, when the war between Ukraine and Russia was just beginning. After a few years, the active phase of the confrontation ended and the conflict seemed to have been frozen for many years. But in February 2022 the war broke out with renewed vigour, and I was back again.
After heavy fighting and huge civilian casualties, a humanitarian disaster reigned in Mariupol, but some residents returned to set up life from scratch: some took apart the rubble, …

The Other Days of Life

THE OTHER DAYS OF LIFE

OLEKSANDR RUPETA

Having launched a war as a fulminant blitzkrieg, Russia has, instead, become bogged down for years in an incredibly bloody conflict against a nation that refuses to be conquered. While the capabilities of the Ukrainian resistance against a much more powerful opponent depend to a large extent on the help of partners, over time, the news of the war turns into a routine, and fatigue sets in for people not directly participating in the conflict.
If everything continues in the same direction, possible

TRIBUTE TO ODESA

LAETITIA VANCON

In June 2022, I worked for three weeks in Ukraine, where I focused on Odesa region and city, a symbolic and strategic place. WAR IN UKRAINE

NICOLE TUNG

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has triggered a refugee crisis, with over 7 million people fleeing the country, while another 8 million remain displaced within. Indiscriminate strikes on civilian areas by Russian forces have sent people underground, sometimes living in dank basements for months at a time. As the war hits its six month mark, the toll on the nation’s psyche and its citizens is all too stark.
